Fishing Reports and Forecasts for Lake Norman July 8,2009

This report submitted on:

Summer patterns are in full swing. Even after the moderate weather we had over July 4th, main lake water temperatures are in the mid-80 F range. The majority of our bass, stripers, and catfish have moved out to deeper water. After the sun rises, look for stripers 30-50 ft deep in relation to the main river channel in the Markers 3-7 area, primarily in the main channel or associated flood plain, but also in deeper coves or drainages that empty into the old river. Bass can be found in 20-40 ft of water on main channel and major creek points. Large schools of perch are found in the same areas as the bass, and there are often catfish below and around the perch. Big flatheads especially seem to like the perch, and smaller blues and channel cats pick up the smaller perch and their bait scraps. Night fishing from now through August is a good option. The fish are friskier, the air is cooler, and you don't have to deal with as much boat traffic.
